A Light Unto My Path

Today, I’m blessed to host the Spiritual Journey Thursday 2026 for the month of July. Our group was asked to reflect and meditate on this phrase: “a light unto my path.” I invite your reflections and blog posts today as we consider the light that guides our way.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105) serves as a reminder that divine wisdom and scripture act as daily, step-by-step guidance to help navigate the dark or uncertain moments of life.

His Word is the light

One of my favorite helpful resources for when I’m reading God’s Word has always been a concordance. Long before the many online versions of this resource emerged when internet use became more popular, I had a hard copy of a concordance and a study Bible with illuminated footnotes. No matter what popped up in my day or my season, I had a resource to guide me to just the right places in scripture to hear the words my heart needed. Today, there are even alphabetized lists for every topic imaginable, like this one.

In the happiest of times, it feels joyful to praise God for His many blessings. Life goes along without bumps, we go to work, cook dinner, take weekend trips, and meet friends for book club chats. We say morning prayers, “praying folks up” on the way to work like we are building prayer credit in Heaven to remain covering our loved ones even when God calls us home. Yes, I do that.

But in the darkest of times, even in the pit of a world up-ended when all the rubble is still falling, even when we can’t see five feet in front of us or think clearly, scripture and prayer are God’s guiding forces to help steer us through every cavern, every storm, every place of darkness – no matter how hopeless life can seem at times. He is our lantern and our guide. He shows us our blessings even in our struggles.

We pray without ceasing for God’s Word to light our paths forward – on days of joy, and on days of sadness, on days of peace and days of turmoil. He is there, lighting our path.

  1. Thank you for hosting this month! I love your chosen scripture and immediately go to Amy Grant’s song, Thy Word,’ from my late teen years. I have benefitted from God’s light on my path every moment. You give me good things to think about and write about today.

  2. Like Linda, the Amy Grant song is running in my head this morning. Not a bad thing. I often keep a running song list of praise songs. Thanks for hosting and reminding us God is with us in ALL times. I’ll post my link later.

      I’d love your list of praise songs ~ I’d love to put it in Spotify and be able to listen to the ones you love. I still am fond of Joni Eareckson Tada from way back in the 80s and The Gaithers. All those songs from my youth group long ago still come flooding back. Have a great day, Margaret!

Your haiku stopped me — ‘when we travel deep / dark paths of uncertainty / His Word is the light.’ There’s something so comforting about the idea of a lamp that lights just the next step rather than the whole road ahead. As a family that travels a lot, we’ve come to love that feeling of only seeing as far as the next bend and trusting the way anyway; you’ve given that a much deeper resonance here. And the note about your old hard-copy concordance and study Bible with the illuminated footnotes was lovely — there’s real comfort in a well-worn physical guide.

    1. Thank you so much! I would love to hear more about your travels. That is something I’m hoping to do more of in the years ahead once I have fully retired. Slow travel, not having too much planned, is the goal and the dream. Thanks so much for reading and pointing out the parallels in the traveling and the journeying with seeing only the parts we need for the next steps.

    Thank you Kim for your reflective blog post on A Light Unto My Path. It is a topic that offers deep thought, prayer, and blessings. After reading your haiku and post, I hold so many of your inspirational lines as a “reminder that divine wisdom and scripture act as daily, step-by-step guidance to help navigate the dark or uncertain moments of life.” This is only one line amongst so many that bolsters my faith. I am thankful for this amazing prompt. It just so happens, that the priest at Mass was speaking about the Lord as our light on our journeys. Then, I can’t remember where I heard the 2nd thought on the same theme. I even think I had a slight moment of dreaming about travels. The Lord moves in different ways on different days but his presence is always a blessing.

    1. Thank you, Carol! This was a line that came to me recently as I was trying to make sense of what seemed unsortable. Scripture has a way of shining the light right where we need to see it!
