March 12: 10:52-11:23 – A Sweet Surprise

Have you ever had a surprise come your way when you least expected it, and it turned the day around? That’s what happened to me yesterday right before lunchtime.

I’d had a morning, already. My father had fallen out of his chair during the night and EMS had to come help him get back up. I was worried, as he was supposed to be getting his chemotherapy but instead ended up getting treatment for pain from his fall. I live five hours north of him and was waiting to hear the report from my brother when my sister-in-law who lives on the south side of the Johnson Funny Farm texted.

Text from my Sister In Law

out of the clear blue

just before lunch

my sister in law texts

asking if I’m in my office

I got you something she reveals

we do this from time to time

buy small gifts for each other

usually I get her Hot Tamales

spicy-like-us cinnamon jellybeans

or York Peppermint Patties

but today there’s a new twist

in the sweet mix: a key lime parfait

because that’s what we ate on

our most recent girls’ getaway

together

sweet surprises win the day!

and together, we win life!

Actual Key Lime Parfait I couldn’t wait to sample…….

  1. Your slice ends with the special friendship between you and your sister in law, how precious.

    “sweet surprises win the day!

    and together, we win life!”

I hope your father gets much better soon.

  2. I like this sister in law of yours. She’s the leprechaun and fairy gift giver, too? I hope your father is OK. This is such a tough time. Soothe it with key lime.

  3. Kim,

That key lime desert looks downright sinful. My A1C is spiking looking at the photo. I’d eat the whole thing right there in the car. What a nice thing for you and your sister to do for one another.

  4. Kim, I did not realize your father was that far away from you until reading this post. That must be difficult. I love the idea of receiving such a sweet gift. Never heard of a key lime parfait, but it looks incredibly delicious!

  5. Kim, this really is the sweetest slice…that parfait looks absolutely dreamy. What a precious sister-in-law. Gestures like this do so much to smooth the sharp edges of life for a few moments. Today a colleague brought me, out of the blue, Harry Potter Butterbeer Goldfish! Never knew of such a thing! It added such a spark of joy to my day. It will not surprise you to know that I absolutely LOVE spicy cinnamon jellybeans (or hearts) and York Peppermint Patties (one of Grandma’s favorites; she bough them for me when I was little). Most importantly, I hope your father is all right after the fall and that he can go on with his scheduled treatment. So much at once. Continued strength, Friend – and you are so right, “together, we win life.”
