How I Beat the Heat

Hallmark’s Christmas in July movies

high velocity fan, full blast

pretending there’s a blizzard

piping hot black coffee

wrapped in sofa throw

Schnoodles piled high

all of us

beating

heat

The older I get, the less I can endure the extreme heat and humidity. Give me a blizzard to handle the scorching heat! I’ve found that a good snowy Hallmark Christmas in July movie with love instead of hate, free from the problems of the world, is my ticket to a better day! Raising a mug to you – Cheers! Stay cool!

  1. Kim, yet again, yet again…I also wrote about finding respite from the heat. I suppose we’re all looking for relief and comfort at present, but still, the invisible bond glimmers between us (as always). I believe Hallmark is currently running TV commercials about Christmas in July with images blending beach and Christmas decor, even a sand “snow” man; it captivates Micah, who’s just beginning to put meanings to all the symbols of the holiday tradition. I have to say I love your method of beating the heat. Give me cold cold AC, piping hot black coffee, a cozy blanket, a good story, and the furry body of a loving dog anytime. In a word: Bliss!

  2. You paint such a fun, funky picture! You remind us to never underestimate the power of the mind :). And I think drinking hot drinks is good in the heat- did you ever read the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books? They are always drinking hot red tea in the heat. Fun piece!

  3. Great idea, Kim! It reminded me of the times when I directed summer programs for young children. I created “Winter in July Week.” We had piles of shaved ice in the water table, a mitten relay, made marshmallow snowmen and iced hot chocolate. Those were some wonderful days.

  5. Kim, here’s to Christmas in July, and beating the heat. You did it! I can just picture you with the schnoodles and your cup of coffee, and even the throw! Fun poem and post!

  6. Kim, heat here in Northern Virginia is in the high 90 degrees and today Washington, DC was 104 degrees but I am sitting here watching a Great American Family Christmas Movie-a small pleasure. How wonderful to have cool down time during the summer with Hallmark, etc.
