March 24: 5:16-5:47 Reorganizing the Pantry

reorganizing

bringing structure from chaos

now I can find food!

My post today for my designated slicing time this afternoon was inspired by Barb Edler’s mustard poem from Sunday. She was having a hard time finding her yellow mustard for a sandwich, and I was having a hard time finding anything in my under-the-stairs pantry. It’s tucked away and can be a little cramped, but we tend to keep sparse supplies of food here anyway, so it works out.

Until it doesn’t, and that is usually because I let it get out of control.

It was time to reorganize our shelves, and since we sold our camper several weeks ago and I kept all of the clear plastic storage containers from that setup, I shifted the same system into my own kitchen.

I started by pulling everything out. Everything.

I organized it all by type of food on the counter, checking dates and tossing expired items. Breads, cereals, spices and baking foods, canned goods, crackers, coffee and teas, and sauces and snacks.

Food organized by type on the counter

I knew something around here was going to get a cleaning at some point when I got sick and they put me on a steroid, so it was all a matter of when the burst of energy would come and what was in my path at the time. I’m glad it was the pantry, and I’m glad it was inspired by fellow slicer Barb and her mustard.

It feels great to know what’s here to eat again!

The refrigerator, though…….well, that’ll take another burst of energy and another inspiration.

  1. Kim,

Good job w/ the pantry. It’s a beast to clean, right? I’m going to resist the temptation to clean my pantry. LOL! I love that Barb inspired you. I like that you have a pantry that is accessible. Mine is a corner planter, and I’ve decided that’s a bad design. I’m curious about your beverages. What are all the bottles next to the wine? šŸ¤” And how long does that bread last?

    1. Glenda, the bread lasts longer if I freeze it, but it will hold steady for about 10 days otherwise. Those bottles next to the wine are Karma probiotic water. On mornings that we don’t eat yogurt, we try to pop one of these in our bag for the day. I love the strawberry lemonade and the blueberry. Yes, cleaning is a beast – – but you are inspiring me today to get over to the fridge next. I showed your photos to a friend looking for a new fridge, and she fell in love with yours!

  2. Kim, the pantry looks great! It’s always nice to have your food all in order. I’m glad you got your burst of energy, and I hope you are continually getting well. Our pantry is not as light and accessible as yours, so we lose cans of food in the depths often. It looks like yours was a rewarding cleaning out!

  3. Lots of inspiration here, Kim. Your pantry look great. I have to do the same thing with my closet, which I let get out of hand. It’s such a good feeling when these tricky tasks are completed. Enjoy and feel better.

  4. Glad you found a good outlet for your “roid” energy burst. Your pantry looks AMAZING! My goal is cleaning my white cabinets. Who thought white cabinets was such a good idea?

  5. Wow, it is looking so neat and orderly now. Great job and great slice! My solution to keeping things tidy is to buy the minimum. If I have more than one of anything, my daughters accuse me of ‘stocking up’ as they’re real minimalists!

  6. I read Barb’s poem and loved it (being a mustard kinda girl myself) and I REALLY love how it inspired you to clean out your pantry! Whoa! The outcome is amazing! I am determined to get some major reorganizing done this spring and summer…do say a prayer…I will attack it in chunks. You inspire me even more to dive in and just start somewhere You inspire me in so many ways!
