Stargazer Paint Chip Elfchen Poem – Stafford Challenge Day 52, SOLC Day 8

Many thanks to Two Writing Teachers for giving writers space and inspiration to reach for the stars.

I love to go wandering through the paint sample section of a store. I sometimes bring a fabric swatch with me to look legit, like a real painter who knows exactly what she’s doing.

Truth is, I’m a paint chip thief, I don’t know what I’m doing, and I have no remorse over any of it.

I look for the best-named paints and pocket the chips. They’re free, but this isn’t why they are the best deal in the entire store.

The names of the colors are pure gold. Even though I bought a set of Paint Chip Poetry words a few years ago with enough chips to last me a lifetime, I can’t just saunter past the paint aisle without challenging myself to a short poem using a named color when it’s there for the choosing and word-amusing.

I chip-lifted Stargazer on a recent trip to WalMart, and I went a wee bit alliterative with a paint chip elfchen poem.

  1. Kim,

I haven’t written paint chip poetry in a while. Maybe I’ll cruise the Home Depot selection soon. Sometimes I look on Pinterest for paint chips. I gave my paint chip poetry away last year. Anyway, lovely elfchen and good idea to modify the paint chip method.

  2. Oh, I’m pocketing this idea! How did I miss paint chip poetry? I only know about paint ships for teaching shades of meaning. I’m heading to a second-grade class today to check out the names of the paint chips.

  3. Imagine getting caught chiplifting and giving the store detective your excuse…and an on-the-spot poem. It feels like a scene in a movie. Maybe you’d meet up with a graffiti artist and have a crazy cross-country writing/lawbreaking adventure. I really like the splendid salt shaker image.

  4. I have a respectable collection of paint chip samples, but I have never written lovely alliterative poems on them. Thanks for a way to repurpose!

  5. Kim, thank you for this reminder. I’m definitely going to do come chip-lifting the next time I’m walking by a paint aisle. I love, love the description of the starry sky as “salt-shaken skyburst scenery” Oh, wow, that is such a mighty metaphor. And that word “skyburst” Gorgeous.

  6. What a beautiful poem!! And, yes, the alliteration works well with this one. I recently bought the Paint Chip Poetry collection but have yet to open it. Reading this makes it very enticing!

  7. I remember your paint chip prompt and I loved it. I remember writing something that I really enjoyed and thought it wasn’t all that bad either. Love your poem! Fun words and the alliteration is on fire!
