Tea Latte Sonnet, dedicated to Denise Krebs – The Stafford Challenge Day 53, Slice of Life Challenge Day 9

Special thanks to Two Writing Teachers for inspiring writers.

Earlier this week, I was drawn to a post by Denise Krebs, who shared her tea latte as a jumpstart to her hiking day. She inspired me to visit my local coffee shop, where they made me an oat milk tea latte. It was divine! Thank you, Denise, for introducing me to this new favorite!

dairy-free tea latte (not beer)

Tea Latte Sonnet

I heard it from a friend so dear

perfect jumpstart: tea latte

(it looks a lot like heady beer)

what a way to start the day!

stopped by the local coffee shop

ordered a lavender, dairy-free

beamed as the oat milk bubbled atop

eagerly sipped my first taste of tea

I’m sending Denise a cross-country high-five

certain I’ve found a new favorite drink

to help me hike mountains awake and alive

I’m raising a toast with cheers ~ and a wink

at first glance, it looks like this drink is naugh-tay

……..

Wait….could I get fired drinking frothy tea latte?!

  1. Nope! You can’t get fired– more like celebrated! Your post is a celebration of community as well as a celebration of a new drink. One of my girls taught me about lavender a few years ago– delicious isn’t it? High fives to both you and Denise. Happy lattes and happy hiking!

  2. Kim,

LOL “it looks a lot like heady beer.” Did you read my comment to Denise? I told her that the tea looks like beer. I don’t know about you, but I feel as though those of us doing the Stafford challenge while doing this challenge, too, are tightening our bond, at least mine feels stronger to you, Denise, and Barb. I know you three understand how hard writing for two challenges is, and I love that Denise inspired your poem and post today.

  3. Ah, Kim, a sonnet! I’m floored that you can just whip these out. I’m enjoying the Stafford Challenge, but I’m definitely doing it more like Kim Stafford and his father did–mostly in my notebook. You and Glenda and Barb are writing publishable poems each day. Many of mine will remain unpublished, unless they get a lot more thought and revision.

I’m so glad you’ve found a new drink to add to your lineup. And it’s legal even. I was drinking my tea while I read your post this morning, so a hearty toast to you, my friend. Thank you for this, oh so fun post!

  4. Kim, this sonnet-!! Your craft is amazing. Truly. I regret not having plunged into the Stafford Challenge, although I feared I wouldn’t be able to sustain it with with all that’s going on at work and with family (I will drop EVERYTHING for time with the granddaughters). But next year…now let me just speak to this heavenly “naugh-tay” latte – it’s too good, I love a good chai latte, and lavender, and every bit of this including the fun virtual clinking of cups for you and Denise. This is writing! This is poetry! This is community! And such a joy to read.

    1. Thank you so much, Fran! You are blessed to have your granddaughters close to you and I don’t blame you one bit for dropping things to spend time with them. They will always know that their Franna puts them first and that they are important. There is no better feeling in all the world than that feeling of security as a child – – and you are such a big part of theirs!
