Modern Haiku – Mo Daley explains this new form at http://www.ethicalela.com as our host today. Forget the syllable counts, just go for three to four lines with a juxtaposition of words or ideas.

Heart Sorting
I confess: I want
the wrath of God
to befall them
***
these hearts I’ve
sorted into piles
by severity of need
***
yet I need forgiveness
and mercy
and grace
Being free of the contrants of number of syllables worked for you well!
So much comes across through just 3 lines. And your placement of which words to be on which line worked well, too. Thanks for sharing.

I also like the freedom that combining several haiku together gives you in this piece. Very evocative, the kind of poem you keep pondering…

Love the title and photo that accompany your beautifully reflective haiku, Kim. All is such a matter of the spirit…knowing our need for mercy, grace, and forgiveness makes us, I believe, more cognizant and capable of trying to extend it. A struggle for sure. We all tend to “sort hearts into piles by severity of need,” I think – bottom line is, we all need each other. Thank you for this meditative offering!
