Mapping the Bedroom

Last month, I started writing posts from prompts in the Writing Down the Bones Card Deck by Natalie Goldberg, shared with me by my friend Barb Edler of Iowa. I’m continuing this month so that I can experience the entire deck of prompts. Goldberg’s book was among those recommended at the top of my reading list by the chair of my doctoral committee a decade ago, and the messages about writing remain timeless. Today’s prompt encourages us to map our bedroom in words as a way to build descriptive techniques.

A Slice of Light

there’s a slice of light

heavenly warmth of sunshine

that pools on the bed

Boo Radley finds it

curls up in a tight sleep-bun

tucks his tail, snoozes

  1. My favorite part of your poem is that word choice “find.” I have cats, and when you look at the world from their perspective you realize how they search for that spot in the sun. But your piece also makes me think of that connection from the heavens to our lives through a ray of sunshine, Lovely thoughts from the bedroom.

  2. Kim,

I can see Boo Radley curled up in a soft, doggy donut in your words. Our slices echo one another today. Most nights we sleep w/ two dogs and a cat. It’s like an old timer family bedroom or petting zoo! And this is the perfect time of year to feel the warm glow of sun streaming through the bedroom window. 🥰

  3. You really have captured something so beautiful and simple here. A beam of light. A beam of light: something taken for granted yet SO gorgeous and consistent.

I assume this is a cat?

They can find sun like a magnet 🙂

    1. We call them catdogs like the old cartoon – – these Schnoodles are actually very catlike in so many ways like their preening and the way they grasp their toys when they play. Dogs by definition, cats the way they act sometimes, but part human because they try their best to talk to us and s’plain things.

  4. I love that you’re sharing about your “slice of light” as your slice of life post! You’ve captured that lovely pooling warmth of light in your words. I’m a wee bit jealous of Boo Radley.

  5. You wrote “there’s a slice of light,” and I immediately thought of Emily Dickinson’s “There’s a certain Slant of light . . .” in her allegorical poem and found myself looking at your poem for something beyond just a physical description. I love the two: “slice of light” and “slant of light.”
