Anna Roseboro of Michigan is our host for Day 23 of #VerseLove. You can read her full prompt here. She inspires us to write April Showers Bring May Flowers poems about the idea that good things come from the not-so-good.
Her challenge: Think metaphorically, about a teary time or not so nice incident that preceded or evolved into a cheery time in your life, and then in sixteen lines or fewer, describe the time or incident that could be an affirmation that “Yes, April showers do bring May flowers” or the opposite.
What Makes them Rescues
their misfortune makes
them rescues ~
the kind
with serious baggage
where cell phone dings
and the
smell of heat
bring flattened-ear,
tucked-tail trembling,
the kind that
gaze into your
eyes, wishing
they could pour out
their story but
certain you
already know
Those puppy eyes that break your heart. So well captured in this small poem. I’m hoping my perfect rescue comes to me soon. I think I may be finally ready to take in a new dog.

Ah Kim – certain you already know. Those puppy eyes reveal the pain. I have known a lot of rescues in my life – I feel like I was one too – so important for those rescues to find their rescuers!

Thank you, Joanne! My hat is off to all who rescue, I just love the idea of a second chance.

Kim,
I’m working today and am now close to tears thinking about those precious rescue pups and all the love they give. They steal my heart every day. And as they gaze into my eyes, I gaze into theirs, as I know you do. Sometimes I lie on the floor next to Snug and think about all he must be thinking. I’m overwhelmed by this. My heart is tender when it comes to dogs. I know yours is, too.

Oh, Kim, I’m thinking of your little sweeties right now. I’m so happy they found you who know their sad, rainy, now redeemed, rescued story. Beautiful.

Kim, I love this poem. It is such a beautiful example of April showers bring May flowers…I am so touched by the idea that a loved dog knows you know their story already, that is precious. I love the alliteration in “tucked-tail trembling.” Beautiful!!

This is beautiful – and heartbreaking too. Your poem has given a voice to those rescues. It makes me want to print it out and hang it at the shelter, or have it on their website.

Kim, this is a sensitive poem about a serious issue these days. Rescue dogs always seem to have a sadness in their stance and eyes. Would you consider offering this image poem or another for my current NPM project, the Poetry Parade Padlet and later Gallery? See invitation at my slice.
