Metaphor Dice are Mirrored Magic 8 Balls – The Stafford Challenge Day 72, Slice of Life Challenge Day 28

Special thanks to Two Writing Teachers

If you’ve never rolled a set of Taylor Mali’s Metaphor Dice, take note: they’re one of the best ways to make poetry accessible for reluctant writers. The red dice are nouns (conceptual, most), white are adjectives, and blue are nouns that represent the direct comparison to the red dice. I rolled the dice:

Naysay Nonet

the truth is a back-handed mirror
because once you say to someone
to prove your argument's point
that they should have called you
you can't turn around
and not have called
them when you
should have
called

  1. I haven’t used my metaphor dice in ages, but your poem is a compelling reason to do so. It’s so convolutedly wonderful! Bolding those two words is definitely the perfect way to assist the reader. Also, you reminded me that I need to revisit nonets. Thanks!

  2. I have a set of these dice! I’ve used them a few times, sometimes really wrestling to work a poem out of it. Oh my gracious, how perfectly you use this metaphor – you are the master of matching idea to form, poetess extraordinaire. This nonet is a polished gem, sparkling with fiery truth. It flows perfectly. And – I love “naysay,” especially paired here with “nonet.” So much of poetry is sound, and your ear is so acutely attuned.

  3. Kim,

I love metaphor dice. I wish ai still had mine. I might turn to the online ones. You’re right that they’re perfect for student use and they make poetry fun. Your poem is fun and quirky. People like honesty in others until that honesty is about them or their convictions. Then they’re not big fans of facts and truth.

  4. Kim, I’ve been wondering about how to finish this month of slices. You’ve definitely inspired me. I have metaphor dice at work so tomorrow don’t be surprised to see a photo of my roll very soon. Calls are indeed important. I appreciate how you frame the importance of calling someone in your nonet. Very clever and provocative poem btw!

  5. Why have I not thought to get out my metaphor dice for the daily poetry writing? Ha! Your Naysay Nonet is so fun. Isn’t it interesting where your mind goes when you see those three word cubes? I’m curious, did you think of a particular (unproductive) argument with someone or were you just having fiction fun? Thanks for this, Kim!

  6. I have had a chance to write with the metaphor dice, but I have never actually owned any or rolled them myself. Thanks to your post, I think I need to order a set. I love the “back-handed mirror” of your poem and the trouble when both parties need to call. I love the title “Naysay Nonet.” Well-played, my friend.
