- Cast Iron Awakenings
still flipping old things ~
hotcakes in cast iron griddles
old wood awakens
a new lease on life
repurposed for the future
strong memories past
I’ve joined The Stafford Challenge to write a poem every day starting tomorrow for the remainder of the year. It’s free, and it looks like a great way to connect and encourage other writers, according to their website. If you’re participating in the challenge, I hope to see you there! I’ll still be regularly participating in all the writing groups I have grown to love – and adding one more! I deeply appreciate all of the writing groups and those who share their ideas and slices of their lives with me.
Heartfelt thanks to Two Writing Teachers for hosting the weekly Slice of Life , giving writers inspiration and space to share.

I saw that Stafford challenge. I thought about it. I didn’t think I would/could do it. Now I’m rethinking (thank you for the nudge) and it’s the part about COMMUNITY that is tipping the scales for me. Thanks!

Mary Lee, other than my days when I am writing with ethicalela.com, I am planning on writing short forms unless I have time for longer poems. I plan to keep a notebook handy and write as I can, even driving places. You can do it!

I love how you include flipping pancakes in an old iron skillet in your poem about flipping old furniture- it adds such a nice light touch. As always, we love to see the photos of a project! And thanks for sharing another challenge, though it does sound a bit daunting! Ill look into it…

I agree with Fran. I like how to placed flipping furniture after flipping pancakes. I loved seeing your refinished table. Now another piece! Go Kim Go! Your projects definitely inspire your writing, too! So fun!

Thanks so much, Sally! I enjoy the process of both refinishing and writing. And they are definitely both processes that build some patience.

Thanks so much! Come write a poem a day! Keep a small notebook and write the short forms. Even write ahead if life gets busy 🙂

If anyone can write a poem a day, you can, Kim. It will be another flip of the script. I wonder if others from our poetry group joined the Stafford Challenge.

I love all this wood work that you are doing – absolutely gorgeous. The lines “old wood awakens/a new lease on life” really speak to me…my son and daughter-in-law work with old wood, crafting many special things. They have gifted us the refurbishing of several old worn mementos – a box of my father’s, a small table of my father-in-law’s. There is such joy and beauty in this work!

I find it redeeming when something need not disappear but can move on to a new life. I enjoyed this simple, elegant poem.

Thank you so much. After reading Braiding Sweetgrass, my awareness for the respect of wood and plants is heightened.
